A new partnership between Worksystems and the Wind & Oar Boat School has resulted in a unique work experience for area at-risk youth. Participants spend 10 weeks building a sail boat and learn valuable soft skills such as communication, teamwork and problem solving. Math and environmental science are also embedded in the curriculum as well as exposure to a variety of tools and processes.
"We believe this program will result in participants returning to school, staying in school, and possibly pursing a career in the trades or engineering," says Andrew McGough, Executive Director of Worksystems. "It's important to help youth understand that you can earn a family wage without necessarily following a traditional four-year college route."
